Long-time Comfort Footwear Designer Announces Results of Star Shoes Project

SPARKS, NV (May 4, 2016) – Arcopédico USA, the only U.S. distributor of high-quality, Portuguese-made, comfort and travel footwear, celebrates its 50th anniversary by announcing revolutionary advancements in shoe comfort research.

Arcopédico came to life in 1966 when Italian scientist Elio Parodi invented a sole allowing for the correct support of the foot’s arch, which became today’s patented twin arch support sole.  Consumers worldwide appreciate the foundation which Arcopédico was founded upon; a universal language of what comfort truly is.

“It’s part of our DNA and continues with our family since my grandfather’s invention,” says Arcopédico International Executive Director, Elio Parodi, namesake and grandson of inventor Elio Parodi. He continues, “With the involvement of a whole new generation, and now with me, wanting to improve and innovate and keep searching for something better for the end consumer.”

To this end, Arcopédico launched an 18 month study called the Star Shoes project.  The purpose of this study was to identify the needs of a large majority of the world’s population in terms of sole comfort.  Customers from 19 different countries, spanning from 5 continents were invited to participate in this innovative study, providing a worldwide database.  Boxes of phenolic foam were sent to over 2,400 consumers, who in turn provided their footprint to researchers at the Institute of Science and Innovation in Mechanical Engineering of the Porto University in Portugal.  As partners in the Star Shoes project, the university took the impressions of Arcopédico’s specific client base and analyzed the prints in several walking situations.  “We analyzed plantar pressure to know if people apply more strength to the anterior or to the posterior of the foot, to know how the person reacts to harder or softer ground materials and walking paces,” says Professor Dr. Mario Vaz.

New paradigms were tested throughout the research discovery, with the use of the mechanical and biomechanical characterization of the project.  Walking simulations allow for an assessment of the plantar distribution of Arcopédico shoes, and for biomechanical walking and posture tests.  “Because of our results, we developed a new plantar topography for Arcopédico’s clients,” says Dr. Mario Vaz.

The result of the Star Shoes study will be registered as industrial property, through the preparation of a new patent.  The innovation of this new sole, “Star Sole” is already under production at Arcopédico factories.  “Looking forward to full production of the Star Sole, we will need new machines, new manufacturing processes, additional and higher qualified worker,” says Parodi.

“While we are celebrating our 50th anniversary, we look forward to another 50 years of new innovations, new patents, new manufacturing adaptations, and of course new comfort shoe styles,” says Arcopédico USA’s marketing manager Sydney Simas; who like Elio Parodi, she is the 3rd generation leading the U.S. branch of the Arcopédico brand.  She continues, “We are proud to be a part of a brand that is scientifically proven and continues to take steps towards new technological advances in comfort footwear.”

The Star Sole is scheduled to be introduced to the U.S. market in Spring/Summer 2017.  More information about the Star Sole and Star Shoes project can be found at – Arcopédico STAR SHOES Project.
