Brown’s wife and co-owner, Margit, serves as company vice president of operations, and their sons Chad and Kurt are members of the management team with Chad managing Metro Orthotics, their medical marketing division, and Kurt serving as the company’s vice president of sales.

Brown entered the footwear industry in 1979, joining a family retail business established by his parents, Ransome and Lois Brown, in 1950. Under his guidance, the business grew from a single store to its present size as a corporate entity. Certified in pedorthics in 1993, Brown earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s in criminal justice at the University of Central Missouri. He spent five years as a Trooper with the Missouri State Highway Patrol before joining the family business.

Brown is past president of the Washington Area Chamber of Commerce and of Downtown Washington, Inc., and past vice president of the Washington Board of Education. He is also a past member of the Washington Civic Industrial Board and served on the St. Louis affiliate chapter of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. In 1995, Missouri’s Department of Economic Development named Brown the state’s "Merchant of the Year.”

First elected to NSRA’s Board of Directors in 1999, Brown served the Association on several committees and as chairman of its Education Committee before being elected an officer of the Association. In 2004, his fellow Board members elected him Chairman of the Board of Directors, and he served in that capacity for two years. During his chairmanship, NSRA increased the business services it offers members, strengthened its educational events, changed its dues structure to better reflect member businesses’ needs and expectations, recruited new members and stepped up its recruitment of women business owners to NSRA’s Board.

In presenting the award, NSRA Past Chairman Jim Sajdak (Stan's Fit for Your Feet, headquartered in Brookfield, WI) commended Brown for his many contributions to NSRA, the footwear industry, and his home community of Washington, Missouri. Brown’s immediate family was at the banquet as he received the Award.

NSRA president Chuck Schuyler said, "I have known Randy for many years, first as a business owner and colleague and now as a friend. Randy and Margit have set an extraordinary example for their sons and their employees, not just on how to run a profitable business, but on how to treat everyone in the workplace with dignity and respect. I can’t think of any business owner more honorable and talented than Randy Brown, and I take pride in sharing his friendship.”

NSRA Chairman Rick Ravel (Karavel Shoes in Austin, TX) added, "Randy always gives 100 percent. He helped build NSRA as an organization and helped us achieve a new level of respect in the footwear industry, taking time from his own business to do so. He gave generously of his time, always without complaint, and his family generously allowed him to do so. I think it’s fair to say that Randy and his family embody the best in the NSRA family and network, and we are all honored to know them.”

NSRA was founded in 1912 to represent independent shoe retailers and provide their companies with business services, education programs and information resources that help them remain profitable and at the leading edge of retail. For more information, please visit
