Tucson, AZ – The National Shoe Retailers Association (NSRA) honored Ed Habre as its 2017 Retailer of the Year during NSRA's Leadership Conference held Nov. 8-9, 2017 in Memphis, Tennessee.

Habre is president of Shoe Mill, a seven-store chain of comfort footwear stores located in Oregon. The company's presentation of unique quality footwear from around the world, is illustrated by Shoe Mill's slogan: “We Put the World at Your Feet!” The family-owned and -managed business operates under high standards and continues to grow during a period of declining retailers and a movement of volume from retail locations to the internet. Shoe Mill has also ventured into the e-commerce arena by developing and continuously updating a full functioning website. Ed has recognized the necessity of a business to plan for the future, so he has developed his next generation and has educated, trained, tested, and managed them all well. He and Shoe Mill’s next set of leaders have been highly involved in the NSRA NextGen program, which focuses on successfully bringing new generations in a family into the retailing business.

First elected to NSRA’s Board of Directors in 1996, Habre’s contributions and dedication to the association is well documented for over 20 years, including many years on the Executive Committee and eventually rising to Chairman (2008 and 2009). Habre was also involved in other NSRA initiatives, such as the development and execution of NSRA's “When the Shoe Fits,” which taught shoe-fitting principles and skills to more than 4,000 retail sales associates. As one of NSRA's active past chairmen, he continues to serve the association on the Board of Directors.

In presenting the award, former NSRA Chairman Alan Miklofsky (Alan's Shoes, Tucson, AZ) said, “Ed is a very strong leader and the success of Shoe Mill would not be possible over either the short term or the long term without a good leader who grasps concepts, solicits and accepts critiques of his business, works tireless hours, delegates properly, supervises in a well-balanced manner, executes flawlessly and maintains an infrastructure that supports the focus for sales and service. In recognition of his skills in building one of the best-run shoe enterprises in the nation and his contributions to the association, I’m pleased to present Ed Habre as National Shoe Retailers Association’s 2017 Retailer of the Year.”

While accepting the award, Ed Habre was quick to point out that this award is one that will be shared by the entire Shoe Mill company, saying: “What we are honored for is the result of a dedicated team of co-workers that puts a premium on meeting the footwear needs of our valued clientele. Knowing that it is always about the best footwear experience possible, my son Josh Habre, Vice President of Sales and Merchandising expresses it this way – We have a consistent theme, which is all about what’s going on under the foot. Our aim is to wrap each foot in an attractive package that is incredibly comfortable… our theme is and will always be making your feet feel great, while you feel great about wearing your footwear.’’
