TUCSON, AZ (November 21, 2016) – The National Shoe Retailers Association (NSRA) honored Mark Denkler as its 2016 Retailer of the Year during NSRA's annual leadership conference held Nov. 10-11 in San Antonio, Texas.
Denkler, who owns Vince Canning Shoes in Delray Beach, Florida, with his wife LaRonda, is a third-generation retailer; his grandfather opened the store in 1952, and the Denklers purchased it from his uncle in 1994. In 2015, Denkler bought a second store, Tootsies, which first opened in 2006. The Denklers have quadrupled Vince Canning sales during their 22 years of ownership. During the past year, they significantly increased comparable sales at Tootsies by over half.
First elected to NSRA's Board of Directors in 2004, Denkler has served the association on the Executive, Finance, Nominations for Directors and Officers, Education and Technology committees. Later he was elected as chairman of NSRA's Board of Directors in 2012, a position he held for two years. As one of NSRA's active past chairmen, he continues to serve the association in a variety of ways including chairman of the Finance and Nominations for Directors Committee.
His civic contributions have included being an elder of his church, as well as the church's bookkeeper and Finance Committee chair. He has also made multiple mission trips for the church, to varied places, including Namibia, Africa; a Native American reservation in Montana; and Asheville, NC, where the mission group worked on home re-building. Currently, he is chairman of the Downtown Delray Beach Taxing Authority, overseeing economic development of the city's Downtown Taxing District. He is also chairman of the Delray Downtown Merchants & Business Association; past chairman of the Delray Beach Parking Management Advisory Committee; and past president of the Delray Beach Rotary Club, where he spent 18 years as its Scholarship Committee chairman.
Vince Canning Shoes initiated an annual Stiletto Race in 2012. Contestants, both male and female, run specific distances in high heels, either as individuals or as members of a relay team; all proceeds from the race go to a local non-profit organization which provides day care to children of low-income parents, allowing the parents to work.
In presenting the award to Denkler, past NSRA chairman Phil Wright (Vernon Powell Shoes, Salisbury, MD) said, “Mark has been selfless in his service to NSRA. His and LaRonda's willingness to take on extra work in an effort to help other shoe retailers makes them both truly noteworthy, and I am pleased to recognize Mark Denkler as 2016's NSRA Retailer of the Year.”
“Mark and LaRonda Denkler have always gone the extra mile,” said NSRA president Chuck Schuyler. “They work to give their customers the best service and the best products. Mark has brought dedication and leadership to NSRA, guiding the Association in terms of programs, educational offerings and business programs. As a past chairman, he continues to actively assist the Board, and I am delighted to see him honored as Retailer of the Year.”
“Mark is a friend as well as an inspiration,” said Jeff Greenberg (Lloyd's Shoes, Carmel, CA), chairman of NSRA. “Every chairman of NSRA comes into office knowing there will be unexpected challenges. Being able to tap into Mark's experience has made it easier for succeeding chairs to get the job done. I am grateful for his assistance, and it is a genuine pleasure to honor Mark as 2016's Retailer of the Year.”
Upon winning the award, Denkler stated “It is truly an honor to be held in such high esteem by an outstanding organization and group of retailing peers. The success could not have been achieved without my wife and business partner, an outstanding staff, great vendor partners, and the peer mentoring from NSRA members.
