Renowned sneaker & lifestyle boutique continues 20th anniversary with dueling sneakers inspired by the biggest rivalry in professional baseball

BOSTON, MA (April 5, 2016) – As part of their yearlong celebration in honor of their 20th anniversary, internationally renowned sneaker boutique and lifestyle brand, Concepts (Cambridge, MA & New York City), is about to release a set of sneakers that pit the cities of the biggest rivalry in baseball history against one another. This Concepts and New Balance collaboration arrives just in time for the start of the 2016 baseball season and pays homage to America’s favorite pastime and the most notorious teams hailing from the East Coast. The Concepts x New Balance “City Rivalry Pack” features two classic New Balance models whose designs are inspired by the baseball towns of Boston and New York City.  

Each city’s sneaker first will launch exclusively in their respective Concepts store in Massachusetts or New York, followed by electronic availability for both models at The sneakers will be available in sizes 5-13. Additionally, Concepts teamed up with the W Hotels & Resorts in Boston and Times Square, NYC, to create unique hotel packages inclusive of being amongst the first to own both models as well as having full access to the city’s official release party.

BOSTON: Concepts x New Balance “City Rivalry” 998
Modeled after scenes from in and around Boston’s ballpark, this New Balance ‘Made in the USA’ 998 draws inspiration from the brown and sage hues of the red clay commonly seen on baseball diamonds, as well as the green facades seen along Boston’s famous Yawkey Way located just steps from the field. The upper is done in premium rust red and green suede with a leather lining, a Concepts-branded footbed and custom designed packaging depicting a ballpark-style popcorn box.

To coincide with the first home game of Boston’s 2016 baseball season on April 11, the Concepts x New Balance “City Rivalry” 998 will be available exclusively at Concepts in Boston starting at 10:00am EST, and at a Concepts pop-up shop at ’47 Brand located at 19 Yawkey Way in Boston at 9:00am EST, for a retail price of $219.95. Concept’s Massachusetts store is located at 37 Brattle Street in Cambridge’s Harvard Square neighborhood.

Electronic sales will be available beginning at 12:00pm EST on April 16 at and includes complimentary shipping domestically.

NEW YORK CITY: Concepts x New Balance “City Rivalry” 997
For Concepts’ take on the New York City model, they’ve taken cue from the historic design behind the Bronx’s hometown team’s logo, adopted in 1909 and originally a medal signifying the highest decoration for bravery exhibited by public safety officers. This classic New Balance ‘Made in USA’ 997 offers a teal premium suede upper with a pebbled leather reflective tongue, leather lining, a Concepts-branded footbed and custom designed packaging modeled after everyone’s favorite ballgame snack in the red striped box with a “prize inside.”

The Concepts x New Balance “City Rivalry” 997 will be available exclusively at Concepts in New York City beginning April 9 at 10:00am EST for a retail price of $239.95. Concepts’ New York store is located at 225 Hudson Street in New York City’s Tribeca neighborhood.

W Hotels & Resorts “City Rivalry Packages”
Sneaker-heads and city enthusiasts will have the opportunity to be the first to get their hands on both the Boston and New York City Concepts x New Balance “City Rivalry Pack” models – a feat that will not be accomplished by anyone else until April 16, once both electronic sales are live – through Concepts’ partnership with the W Hotels & Resorts. The “City Rivalry Packages” at the W Boston feature two tiers of hotel packages – “Spectacular” and “Cool Corner” – with amenities such as:

  • Two or four pairs of the Concepts x New Balance “City Rivalry Pack” (choice of BOS or NYC versions)
  • Up to four tickets to the invite-only sneaker release party at the W Boston with a top shelf open bar (April 9 from 8:00-10:00pm)
  • Overnight accommodations with late check-out
  • A sneak preview of the sneakers upon booking
