GDS 2013 CONVINCES AS BUSINESS PLATFORM

(March 2013) Despite heavy snowfall and airport strikes in Düsseldorf and Cologne, the recent concurrent staging of GDS 2013 – international event for shoes & accessories and GLOBAL SHOES 2013 – leading trade show for sourcing, attracted approximately 21,300 trade visitors from about 100 countries. Befitting the inclement weather, 1,158 exhibitors from 39 countries presented the footwear trends for the Autumn/Winter 2013/14 season.

The GDS and GLOBAL SHOES organizer is pleased that despite these difficult circumstances, high quality trade visitors travelled to Düsseldorf, Germany. According to a survey, 81.3% of the attendees had purchase-making authority. This percentage was also very high at the previous events. Werner Matthias Dornscheidt, President & CEO of Messe Düsseldorf, considers this a confirmation of the GDS and GLOBAL SHOES concept: "We hear from exhibitors time and again that decision-making buyers come to GDS. Düsseldorf is and will continue to be a key meeting point for the shoe sector. This is also evident at GLOBAL SHOES which attracts many international visitors.”

Just as top decision-makers are part of GDS, celebrities have become a regular feature at the trade fair. This time Luisa Hartema, winner of "Germany’s Next Topmodel” and front-row guest Jana Pallaske (German actress) attracted a lot of interest during the catwalk shows.

GDS 2013 did not just present trends for grown-ups – the re-designed kidwalk Area was a hit with the visitors: "At our trade fairs we showcase the entire cross-section of the footwear sector. This is why I am delighted when on the one hand our shows are successful and provide the shoe theme with the glamour it deserves while on the other hand new concepts like our kidwalk meet with such positive approval. This proves once again that the sector needs a strong event combining all themes and segments under one roof,” reported Kirstin Deutelmoser, Director GDS and GLOBAL SHOES. Another highlight was the trendy Design Attack segment with the motto "Snow TV” featuring young designers in addition to well-known companies from Portugal.

New at GDS 2013 was "Shoes-Contacts”, a matchmaking platform developed in cooperation with m2b GmbH. After its launch in mid November 2012, the first meetings took place at GDS 2013 – 65 in total. Chad Walwick, Distribution Manager at the U.S. label OluKai, made use of the service to find a German distributor for his collection. "We are a young company and are still building our international business. Matchmaking was therefore very helpful for us. We were introduced to many potential partners. Now it is up to us to select the best fit.” Alan Scott, CEO of Lotus, is putting together a sales team for Germany with the help of the matchmaking forum. "Several high-quality meetings were organized for us at GDS. I am confident that the candidates include a number of suitable distribution professionals for us.”

According to a survey conducted at GDS 2013, nappa and suede leather will be the most important materials for next winter in addition to metallic, brocade and effect materials. As expected, most retailers consider black and brown shades as the most significant colors for the Autumn/Winter season. While German and foreign retailers agree on the classic top-two tones, military uniform blue is a favorite outside of Germany – followed by olive and army green and platinum/gold - while German retailers rank red as No. 3 after black and brown. With a clear 47%, brick, oxblood and rust red were defined as the must-have colors for the German market. In comparison, red shades only account for 22% on an international scale.

Concerning trends, German and international retailers agree about the "black is back” statement focusing on sneaker boots and low-cut boots but opinions differ when it comes to slim shapes. Outside of Germany slim shapes are regarded as the second most important trend (40%), compared to only 18% in Germany.

In cooperation with the German Association of the Shoe and Leather Goods Manufacturers (HDS/L), three prizes were awarded at GDS: the "German Shoe Award” to kids’ shoe manufacturer Ricosta for its "Rallye” style shoe providing protection against abrasion and the "HDS Junior Award 2013” to Isabel van de Sand while TV moderator and musician Fernanda Brandao was named "Shoe Woman of the Year 2013”.

"On the first day fewer visitors were on site. This was certainly also due to the weather complicating travel arrangements. The second day was notably better attended. The quality of the customers was good. We were visited by the right chain stores and E-commerce players.”

"We even took more orders on the first day than a year ago. Attendance is great especially in the mornings where we are very busy. But we also prepare well for the trade fair, selectively inviting buyers and coordinating appointments. We have been represented at GDS for 40 years now.”

"We were quite satisfied with our trade fair participation. Retailers particularly liked our handle bags, a retro style from the 1950s, which we offer in a number of colors.”

"In terms of the quality standard we expected in advance of GDS, we can draw quite a positive balance. Especially on the last two days visitor movement was satisfactory by all means. Furthermore, the response to our collection has been good and we had interesting conversations.

Although the trade fair dates were pretty late this year it is important for us to continue supporting GDS as the leading trade fair.”
