As a reaction to requests from numerous European associations and companies, Messe Düsseldorf will stage the first GDS Select – Premium European Shoe Fair, from April 17 - 19, 2013 in Shanghai. The special show will be held as part of the China International Footwear & Leathergoods Exhibition – CIFL at the Shanghai Exhibition Center. The event will be supported by the China Commerce Association for General Merchandise (CCAGM) - the state retail federation whose members include all the well known department stores and shopping centers in the country - and Adsale, a long-standing partner of Messe Düsseldorf. Another edition of GDS Select is planned in autumn 2013 to take place parallel to the CHIC fashion fair in Beijing.

Messe Düsseldorf is renowned as the organizer of GDS – international event for shoes & accessories, and GLOBAL SHOES – leading trade show for sourcing, held twice annually in Düsseldorf, Germany. Through its subsidiary Messe Düsseldorf China, the company has been active in China since 1999 with offices in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Chongqing and Shenyang.

Messe Düsseldorf takes advantage of the great interest in European shoes and bags which are more popular than ever in the Chinese fashion scene. In line with their rising income, the Chinese population is also developing a taste for higher quality consumer goods – including clothing, footwear and bags. In the shoe sector alone, experts anticipate the market share for footwear in the mid to high-end price range to increase from the current 60% level to 70% in 2020 – with the premium segment expanding above-average. Demand for collections designed in Europe is correspondingly high.

GDS Select 2013 will be a special show for selected international brands and will be held in its own pavilion as a trade fair in its own right alongside the China International Footwear & Leathergoods Exhibition. Both events are only open to trade visitors from the fashion retail and industry segments. On a gross exhibition space of 215,200 square feet, more than 200 exhibitor collections will be showcased in the SEC’s stylish exhibition halls located in the center of Shanghai’s fashion and business district. The exhibitors’ collections will be complemented by a comprehensive supporting program, including design competitions as well as seminars and lectures focusing on fashion and business aspects. To mark the event, the CCAGM will invite some 1,000 buyers from large department stores across China to a summit meeting for the shoe sector. Another highlight will be the Shanghai Fashion Week which will overlap with the trade fairs.

Despite the current slight economic slowdown, China is a promising market for many manufacturers of fashionable leather goods and one that to set to become even more important in the years ahead, especially for German and European companies. Between 2005 and 2010, average spending on shoes by urban Chinese households almost doubled (from Yuan 176.18 in 2005 to Yuan 323.39 in 2010). The average retail price for women’s shoes (spring fashions) rose in the last two years alone from Yuan 600 to nearly Yuan 1,200 and for men’s shoes from Yuan 400 to some Yuan 800. Consumption of high-quality international consumer goods is growing rapidly as China’s middle and upper class is expanding and increasingly interested in western brands. According to estimations by the Boston Consulting Group BCG, the Chinese middle and upper classes will expand from the estimated 150 million in 2010 to 400 million in the year 2020. The young, fashion-oriented segment of the population aged 18 - 35 accounts for the largest group of those buying international branded shoes and accessories. The leading imported labels are those from Italy, followed by France, Germany and the U.S.
